Sunday 10th April:
An early awakening as a noisy group of departing Americans make no attempt to respect that others not leaving might still wish to be asleep. It must have been bad as I get up, dress and go and politely make just that point.
Plenty of chat over breakfast with two other English couples who have both just returned from the Galapagos, and who both confirmed just how brilliant it was. It's going to be hot, and there'll be plenty to do, so bring it on. We also ask to be moved as our room is not much bigger than a broom cupboard, Beneficio kindly organises it before showing us round a bit more and we take a stroll down into Zuleta, and hitch a ride back. Mango, the wonderful Swiss mountain dog accompanies us.
As we chat over breakfast we conclude that this place is more B&B, than hotel, albeit with hotel prices, so they need to update their model. The afternoon plan is agreed, we will visit the Condor project, Lorna in the horse drawn carriage, me on horseback, I'll have to see if I can do any better than in Mongolia.
A morning stroll is followed by a visit to the Condor project in the afternoon. Run by an enthusiastic French guy, Yann, I ride up and back on horseback, in some style, and Lorna on the back of a small carriage. We are entertained well and are visited, Lorna especially by a host of biting insects. The Condors are a highly endangered species and this is part of a project to rear them in captivity before releasing them back into the wild. Given that they can live up to 80 years and don't have chicks until they're eight or nine, much patience is required.
