Sunday 24th April:

A fabulous drive out of a traffic clogged Arequipa, from 2,300 metres up to 4,910 metres with a stop for some coca tea along the way. Did it make any difference, well it certainly is a diuretic, and we had to clamber over some rocks at the high point to find a decent location to pee. We felt the effects of the altitude here that's for sure.

Lorna is amazed at the scenery, and being in the mountains, in fact we actually reach the snow line. Vicuña, alpaca and llamas are plentifully spread around the altiplano as we make our way to Colca Lodge, for a two night stay.

This is the best scenery so far this trip, magnificent volcanoes, green valleys and winding switch back roads, and plenty of wildlife on a terrain known as the Pampa. The llamas feed on a grass similar to the paramo we saw at altitude in Ecuador.

Our highest altitude today was higher than anything in Europe or North America, and as high as Tserko Ri, the last peak I climbed in the Himalayas.

Less fabulous today, is Tiger's demise at the hands of Racing 92, 16-19, although having read the write up the three point margin flatters somewhat. Less fabulous also was me tweaking my back, bending down to photograph a llama. Don't think it's too serious, and a very nice massage at the powerful hands of the diminutive Nancy eases it somewhat.

A decent dinner, this time included, but once again Lorna has alpaca, and it's like pork with less flavour; my Ossobuco is tender and tasty.
