Definitely one of our least memorable days touring, rising at 1.45am and getting to our hotel around 6.30pm, and twelve of those hours spent in either a bus or a vehicle. Cox and Kings would not recommend an overflight of the Palpa & Nasca lines, and instead offered a land tour, it's not to be recommended, too little content, and too much time spent taking in some quite forgettable scenery.
Our guide Erik, nice enough guy, but his English was not really good enough for a guide. Misunderstanding over whether lunch was included, and having paid for a breakfast we shouldn't have, we declined to pay again.
Our land tour comprised a viewing from two towers, which did virtually no justice to the Nasca Lines. The Maria Reiche museum was in a sorry state, and although it could have been interesting, the German lady did after all spend 50 years mapping, measuring and trying to explain how the lines came into being, by whom and for what purpose, the whole place exuded a lack of care and interest locally.
Erik suggested a couple of other stops which we paid extra for, a restored Inca administration centre and a pre-Inca irrigation system. These barely altered the fact that this tour did not pass muster. Too long on the road, no water provided, no lunch provided, no photo stops, although there was little to excite, and we even had to request a comfort break.
The day ended on a better note after an excellent meal at the Hacienda Bahia Paracas, an excellent hotel.
