Tuesday 19th April:
Well even by Mira's standards 6.15am breakfast is early, but a 7.15am dry landing on San Christobal Island to see the frigate birds nesting was a great way to finish our Galapagos visit. The females preen themselves and puff up a large red breast to attract the many males cruising around overhead. Also a good number of nesting pairs of blue footed boobies prepared to preen and strut their stuff, just a shame I took the wrong camera along, but the Fuji, I'm sure will come good with some cropping.
After disembarking and checking in the the airport, we loiter around the town of San Christobal for a couple of hours and enjoy an iced coffee with Tome & Julie, and promise to take them to Hambleton Hall when they come to England, which they clearly love, in September.
The good news is that we find wifi and can reassure folk back home that we are safe and sound, amazed at the various comments concerned about our welfare. The even better news is that we find that Tigers beat Saints at Franklins Gardens and are now seven points clear in 4th place with two games to play.
We thoroughly enjoyed the cruise, and it was a good group, no knobs, good comradeship, and we will be in contact I'm sure.
Two flights, San Christobal to Guayaquil, and Guayaquil to Lima. The first comfortable and straightforward, the second also good but with a massive queue to get through security, and then great fun on the plane. Lorna as ever was the centre of attraction, especially for a very attractive young man, who chatted to her all the way. He was part of a group of 13 young people, employees of a pharmaceutical company, who had won a reward trip to São Paulo to a massive party and concert. Loads of selfies taken and already posted for the world to see.
As we waited to collect our luggage we could hear a large group of girls cheering and even screaming randomly. As we exited the area to look for our pick-up, there must have been at least 200 of them, waving banners and pictures, and waiting for some hunk of a pop star to arrive. Lorna played to the crowd, waving both arms and giving them the smile, and they just screamed and screamed, it was hilarious.
By this time we had said our farewells to the six Californians who had also traveled to Lima, and will be making their way up to Macchu Pichu a little before us. During our 40 minutes ride into Lima from an exceedingly busy airport, we checked the itinerary with Pamela, and started the process of arranging a flight over the Nasca Lines.
The Casa Andina Private Collection Miraflores, now there's a mouthful, is in a decent neighbourhood, and is a very comfortable hotel. We have a light bite and get our heads down just before midnight having done all the iPad stuff.
