Tuesday 26th April:

A return to Arequipa at a leisurely pace, and the four hours is as scenic as it was coming in the other direction two days ago. The wildlife is complimented this time by four young flamingoes, apparently you can tell they are young as they had turned pink yet.

One of the most noticeable features of Arequipa and most other towns and cities in Peru is the buildings, not the historic ones in the centres, but all the others, homes, shops, businesses in surrounding districts. They are all half built, just two stories, but with the steel reinforcing rods protruding from the various walls and pillars, in case additional stories are added at a later date. We're led to believe that when you build the first two stories attract much less tax than the third and additional stories, and so most buildings never get beyond two stories. It certainly ain't pretty to look at.

Good to be back at Casa Andina, it's a lovely hotel, with a beautiful airy courtyard full of tables and sofas and wifi of course. I call my Dad and he's pleased to hear from us, says he's spoken to Philip who was not really with it, which aligns with Hanna's comments the other day. It seems the tumour hasn't shrunk and there may well be another one. Philip did mention another visit to Charing Cross hospital, and further treatment may be considered, perhaps even immunotherapy, I not quite sure what means.

Dined tonight at a restaurant recommended by Tess, the Aussie lady next to us last night in Colca. La Trattoria del Monasteria is an Italian, and opens its doors at 7pm on the dot, if you're there early, then you have to wait outside, as we did. Excellent meal for both of us, which involved tiramisu and brownie and ice cream, shall I go on?
